Windows (eng. ferestre) este denumirea sistemelor de operare dezvoltate de firma Microsoft .

Primul sistem Windows (Windows 1.01) a fost disponibil în noiembrie 1985. Dezvoltarea produsului a continuat, in toamna lui 1987 având loc lansarea produsului Windows 2.02. În 1987 Microsoft scoate pe piata Windows/386. În mai 1990 a avut loc lansarea Windows 3.0, acesta vânzandu-se în peste 10 milioane de copii. Windows 3.1 a fost disponibil pentru cumparatori in aprilie 1992. Aceasta noua versiune s-a vandut in peste 3 milioane de copii in primele trei luni. Au urmat:

Windows for Workgroups 3.1 în octombrie 1992;
Windows NT 3.1, 1 martie 1994;
Windows NT 3.5, 6 septembrie 1994;
Windows NT 4.0 august 1996;
Windows 95, lansat în august 1995, este un sistem de operare pe 32 de biti, incluzând o interfata utilizator revizuita;
Windows 98, iunie 1998;
Windows NT 5.0 care va fi transformat în Windows 2000, lansat pe 15 decembrie 1999;
Windows Me, 14 septembrie 2000;
Windows XP, 25 octombrie 2001.
Windows 2003, 24 aprilie 2003.
Windows Vista, octombrie 2006.

Prin sistemul MUI (Multilingual Interface), ce permite separarea interfetei de lucru de elementele de programare, a fost localizata si prima versiune în limba româna a sistemelor de operare Microsoft Windows, si anume Windows XP. Interesul pentru varianta în limba româna a fost scazut, lucru care a determinat nelocalizarea de catre Microsoft România a Windows Server 2003. Lipsa de popularitate s-ar putea datora si lipsei calitatii traducerilor, cât si datorita suportului insuficient pentru caracterele românesti (caracterele s si t erau generate incorect, folosind alte coduri Unicode si alta tipografie decât cele din standardele românesti)

Sistemul de operare Windows a cucerit o foarte mare parte a pietii. Se estimeaza ca peste 85% din calculatoarele personale ruleaza Windows. Cu toate acestea, sisteme de operare precum Linux, Mac OS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris etc. au recuperat în ultimii ani o parte a pietei, reducând astfel monopolul aproape total al Microsoft (care avea peste 95% cota de piata în 1999). Anumite grupuri, în special Novell, considera ca urmatoarea versiune de Windows nu va determina utilizatorii sa faca un upgrade, ci fie sa ramâna la versiunea veche (tendinta vizibila deja - un numar destul de mare de clienti refuza sa treaca de la Windows 2000 la XP) sau sa se orienteze spre Linux. Aceasta tendinta, de migrare dinspre Windows spre alte platforme, poate fi considerata atât o reactie la adresa insecuritatii sistemului de operare, cât si datorita anuturilor Microsoft legate de cerintele mari de sistem ale versiunilor ulterioare si de lipsa unor îmbunatatiri radicale în sistemul de operare (îmbunatatiri care se limiteaza momentan la o versiune noua de NTFS, o noua interfata grafica si API îmbunatatit si un sistem de management al utilizatorilor relativ putin modificat).
